UH downs Fullerton 75-69 in Big West opener
FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) — Eddie Stansberry scored 25 points as the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team topped Cal State Fullerton 75-69 on Thursday night.
The game marked the first Big West Conference matchup of the season for both teams.
Drew Buggs had 17 points and six rebounds for the Rainbow Warriors (10-5). Samuta Avea added 11 points and Bernardo da Silva had 10 points and 10 rebounds for UH.
Austen Awosika had 22 points for the Titans (5-11). Jackson Rowe added 16 points and nine rebounds, and Brandon Kamga had 12 points.
The Rainbow Warriors led by double-digits in both halves, but needed to hold off a late rally by Cal State Fullerton.
Da Silva’s layup with 8 minutes, 39 seconds remaining put UH up 64-48 before the Titans began to chip away.
Fullerton used a 16-3 run over the next five minutes to close within three points. A pair of free throws by Awosika brought the Titans within 69-68 with 1:06 left, but Stansberry hit a jumper in the paint before both Buggs and he made a pair of free throws to put the game away.
Hawaii next plays UC Irvine on the road on Saturday.
