The opening Big West Conference series for the University of Hawaii men's and women's basketball teams were canceled Saturday due to COVID-19 issues in the Cal Poly programs.
The Cal Poly men's team called off its first two Big West series -- including a pair of games scheduled for Sunday and today against the Rainbow Warriors at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center -- due to a positive COVID-19 test within its program. The Mustangs also canceled their home series against UC San Diego (Jan. 1-2).
The canceled games are considered "no contests," the Big West said in a news release.
The UH women's series against the Mustangs, also scheduled for Sunday and today but at Cal Poly, was canceled due to a COVID-19 issue with one of the Mustangs' recent opponents.
The UH teams are now set to open Big West play Jan. 8-9 against UC Riverside, with the Warriors on the road and the Wahine at home.
