The University of Hawaii men's and women's basketball teams each lost a game to Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday as both squads went winless in their two-game weekend series against the Roadrunners.

Despite a fast start, the Rainbow Warriors couldn't keep up with the Runners in falling 83-72 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. It was the third straight loss for UH, which dropped to 3-3 overall, 1-3 in Big West Conference play.

Hawaii jumped out to a 9-0 lead thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Junior Madut and another by Justin Webster, but Bakersfield chipped away and eventually went ahead 16-14 on Taze Moore's jumper midway through the first half. The Runners never trailed again and held a double-digit lead throughout the majority of the second half.

The Rainbow Warriors were outscored 40-24 in the paint and were outrebounded 39-20.

Webster finished with 23 points and six steals, and James Jean-Marie added 14 points for UH. Justin Elder-Davis scored 22 points to lead the Runners (9-4, 5-1).

In Bakersfield, Calif., Amy Atwell score a season-high 23 points as the Rainbow Wahine lost to the Runners 51-43.

Like the men, the UH women sped out to an early lead (8-0) before Cal State Bakersfield was able to catch up thanks in part to Hawaii's 4 of 24 (16 percent) shooting from the floor as the Runners led 19-14 at halftime. Hawaii (1-3, 0-2) never led in the second half.

Andie Easley led the Roadrunners (4-4, 2-2) with 15 points.

Hawaii plays Cal State Fullerton next Friday and Saturday, the women at home and the men on the road.
