The Maui News

Rado Parapunov and Patrick Gasman each posted double-doubles as the top-ranked University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team rallied for a four-set victory over No. 3 UC Santa Barbara on Thursday in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Parapunov had 16 kills and 11 digs, and Gasman registered 14 kills and 10 blocks in the 16-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 victory. The match — the first of three in a row between the highly ranked teams — was the Big West Conference opener for both teams.

After the Gauchos (4-1) ran away in the first set, the Rainbow Warriors (5-0) responded by pulling away midway through the second to even up the match. UH capped off a close third set with a 3-0 run before repeating the feat in the fourth, with King Kekaulike High School graduate Colton Cowell ending it with his seventh kill of the match.

Cowell struggled on offense, hitting just .034 as UH hit .322 as a team. He finished with seven digs, four assists, two blocks and four service errors. The Rainbow Warriors outblocked the Gauchos 14-6.

Randy DeWeese led UC Santa Barbara with 21 kills.

The teams play again today.
