Maui teen Liko Arreola had the rare opportunity to take on some of the world's best archers at the NFAA Vegas Shoot.
The 13-year-old from Makawao not only beat them all, she became the prestigious event's youngest member of the 900 club.
Arreola won the championship compound female division at the Vegas Shoot, held April 14-17 at the South Point Hotel & Casino, with a clean score of 900, hitting 72 bulls-eyes.
Taking advantage of an exception this year that allowed archers from any age group to compete in the championship division, Arreola beat out 26 competitors, including pros Alexis Ruiz (899) and Paige Pearce (898, plus 60 in shootout) for the title. Ruiz is ranked No. 1 in the outdoor world ranking; Pearce is No. 4.
"I feel more confident in myself and I'm really happy," Arreola was quoted as saying in a story posted on the event website.
She became the seventh female to shoot a perfect 900 in the event, and the youngest person ever to accomplish the feat in the championship division.
The Vegas Shoot bills itself as "the largest and most prestigious indoor archery tournament in the world" that typically attracts nearly 4,000 archers, from beginner to Olympic champions.
