Cyr takes US Open local qualifier

Maui’s Sam Cyr won the U.S. Open local qualifier Saturday at King Kamehameha Golf Club, earning a spot in the final qualifying stage for this year’s third major.

Cyr, a King Kekaulike High School graduate who won two NAIA national titles during his collegiate career at Point Loma Nazarene, shot a 3-over 75 to top the 23-player field.

Kyle Hayashi of Wailuku, Kihei teen Reagan James Miles and Zachary Fahmie of Las Vegas tied for second a shot back. The three golfers participated in a playoff to determine alternates, with Hayashi winning to take the first alternate spot and Miles earning second alternate.

Cyr advances to final qualifying, which will be held June 7 at various sites across the Mainland. Winners qualify for the 121st U.S. Open, set for June 17-20 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.


Kozaki of Wailuku has hole-in-one at Dunes

Jayson Kozaki of Wailuku made a hole-in-one on Friday at The Dunes at Maui Lani.

Kozaki used an 8-iron to ace the No. 6 hole from 144 yards. Royden Heirakuji witnessed the shot.
