King Kekaulike High School graduate Teani Arakawa scored in the 48th minute, giving the South Dakota State University women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over the University of Hawaii on Sunday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Oahu.
Making her third start for the Jackrabbits, Arakawa -- who last week acknowledged that she wanted to show the Rainbow Wahine (0-1-1) "what they missed out on" when they stepped back from recruiting her -- broke through the UH defense early in the second half and fired a shot towards the far post from 18 yards out that snuck underneath the keeper's glove and into the net.
It was the second goal of the season for Arakawa, a freshman who led Na Alii to the state championship game as a junior in 2020. With the win, the Jackrabbits improved to 4-0.
* WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Brooke Van Sickle had 17 kills and nine digs, and the Rainbow Wahine rebounded from a three-set loss the night before with a 25-23, 25-21, 25-23 victory over Texas A&M on Sunday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Mia Johnson added 14 kills for UH (2-1).
The Rainbow Wahine were coming off a 26-24, 27-25, 25-21 loss to Marquette on Saturday night. Van Sickle led UH in that match with 14 kills, with Amber Igiede adding eight kills.
Van Sickle and Igiede were selected to the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic all-tournament team.
UH next plays at Utah Valley on Thursday.
