Oregon State set to return to Valley Isle for Maui Jim Maui Classic
The Oregon State women’s basketball team announced its nonconference schedule for the 2021-22 season on Friday, and it includes a pair of games on Maui.
The Beavers will play Idaho on Dec. 17 and Northern Iowa on Dec. 19 at the Lahaina Civic Center as part of the Maui Jim Maui Classic. Northern Iowa and Idaho are slated to play each other on Dec. 18.
It is yet to be determined whether fans will be allowed to attend due to COVID-19 concerns, and the Oregon State news release on the schedule said: “Fans note — Due to COVID-19 related health regulations, the island of Maui is currently not allowing spectators at events. Check OSUBeavers.com for event updates.”
Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino said Wednesday he plans to reevaluate the county’s “Safer Outside” initiative on Sept. 30. The initiative, which prohibits fans from attending games along with restrictions on restaurants and bars, started last week in response to rising COVID-19 case numbers in the county.
The event is returning to Maui for the first time since 2019, when it took place for the fourth straight year. Vertical Sports Maui is the local organizer of the tournament.
“We definitely want to continue having it on Maui,” VSM executive director Josh Duinker said Monday. “Whatever we can do here on Maui, whether that’s to have fans — that’s ideal, obviously — but if we can’t have fans then we’ll have to work with that.”
Oregon State went 12-8 last season, making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The OSU roster includes second-year freshman guard Talia von Oelhoffen, the daughter of Kimo von Oelhoffen, a Molokai native who played in the NFL from 1994 to 2007.
