The University of Hawaii men’s basketball team made its first visit to Cal State Bakersfield a successful one, defeating the Roadrunners 63-59 on Thursday.

Junior Madut led the Rainbow Warriors with 17 points, including the go-ahead jumper in the closing minutes and a pair of free throws with two second left to seal UH’s fourth straight win.

Jerome Desrosiers added 16 points and Noel Coleman scored 10 for the ‘Bows (8-5, 3-0 Big West Conference).

UH trailed 28-26 at halftime but shot 68.2 percent (15 of 22) from the field in the second half to rally and hold off the Roadrunners (6-7, 1-3), who got a game-high 22 points from Justin McCall.

The Rainbow Warriors next play at Cal Poly on Saturday.

On Thursday night in Honolulu, Daejah Phillips had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the UH women to a 69-52 win over Cal State Bakersfield.

Jacque David added 10 point for the Rainbow Wahine (6-7). Jayden Eggleston led the Roadrunners (1-9) with 17 points.

The teams play again Saturday. Thursday’s game — which was scheduled after Hawaii’s original opponent, Cal Poly, was unable to play due to COVID issues within its program — does not count toward the Big West standings.
