The Maui High School baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to edge King Kekaulike 2-1 in a Maui Interscholastic League game Saturday at Maehara Stadium in Wailuku.

In a pitching duel with Na Alii’s Jaxon Grossman, the Sabers’ Jonathan Vergel de Dios and Akoni Fujihara-Olsten combined to largely shut down King Kekaulike. Starter Vergel de Dios allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out six in four innings before Fujihara-Olsten came in and threw three shutout innings, striking out three.

Grossman fanned eight over six innings. He allowed two runs on four hits, three walks and two hit batters.

With the win, the Sabers took the season-opening series against Na Alii 2-1.

In Saturday’s second game, Raige Velez, Micah Torres and Diego Akahi combined for a two-hit shutout as Kamehameha Maui beat Lahainaluna 5-0 to win their series 2-1.

All three Warriors pitchers struck out two batters each. Kamehameha Maui also got good production at the plate, collecting nine hits.
