UH drops Big West opener to UCSD in 5 sets

The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team saw its nine-match winning streak come to an end after falling to UC San Diego 25-22, 25-23, 25-27, 18-25, 15-9 on Wednesday in La Jolla, Calif.

Dimitrios Mouchlias had 13 kills and 10 digs to lead the third-ranked Rainbow Warriors in their Big West Conference opener. UH (13-3, 0-1) got nine kills apiece from Spyros Chakas and Guilherme Voss, who also tied his career high with eight blocks.

After erasing a two-set deficit, the Rainbow Warriors led early in the fifth before a 5-1 Tritons run put UH behind 12-8. UCSD (8-6, 1-1) scored the final three points to close out the win.

Kyle McCauley and Ryan Ka each had double-doubles to lead the 10th-ranked Tritons. McCauley had 19 kills and 12 digs, and Ka had 19 kills and 11 digs, helping UCSD outhit UH .280 to .192 and outdig the Rainbow Warriors 56-37. Shane Benetz added 14 points and six blocks.

The teams play again Friday.
