Dimitrios Mouchlias had a career-high 31 kills to lead the fourth-ranked University of Hawaii men's volleyball team to a five-set victory over No. 14 UC Irvine on Saturday in Irvine, Calif.
The Rainbow Warriors, who had already clinched the No. 2 seed for this week's Big West tournament, rallied to conclude the regular season with the 21-25, 25-18, 25-27, 25-20, 15-11 victory. They improved to 22-5 overall and 7-3 in the Big West.
Mouchlias, a sophomore opposite from Greece, hit .510 in 49 swings and also had two aces, five blocks and four digs. Fellow Greek standout Spyros Chakas added 16 kills and four blocks, while setter Jakob Thelle dished out 54 assists to go with two aces, eight digs and three blocks as UH defeated UC Irvine for the 11th straight time.
Francesco Sani had 24 kills to lead the Anteaters (10-15, 3-7).
The Big West tournament begins Thursday at UH's SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors have a first-round bye and will face either UC Santa Barbara or Cal State Northridge in the semifinals on Friday night. The championship match is set for Saturday night.
