Thomas Russell fired 21 kills as the Seabury Hall boys volleyball team rallied from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Nanakuli in five sets in a New City Nissan/HHSAA Division II state tournament semifinal Friday night at the Kalani gym in Honolulu.
Russell also had seven digs for the Maui Interscholastic League champion Spartans (9-2), who defeated the Golden Hawks (11-3) 22-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-12, 15-12 to secure their spot in the D-II championship match, set for 5 p.m. today at the Blaisdell Arena.
Blaze Potratz added 13 kills and seven digs, Tyler Russell contributed 11 kills, three aces and eight digs, and Luca Connor had match highs of 50 assists and five blocks for Seabury, which will be making its first appearance in the state final since 2014. The Spartans won it all in 2010.
The third-seeded Spartans will face fourth-seeded Pearl City in today's final. The Chargers (13-2) upset top-seeded Saint Louis (11-6) 25-21, 25-15, 22-25, 28-26 in Friday's second semifinal.
In the Division I fifth-place match today at 12:30 p.m., MIL champion Kamehameha Maui (14-2) will take on Kamehameha Hawaii.
The third-seeded Maui Warriors advanced to the match with a 23-25, 25-22, 15-13 victory over Roosevelt in a consolation semifinal at McKinley on Friday.
