NAPILI — It was far from perfect, but the Seabury Hall girls volleyball team will take their sweep of Maui Prep on Thursday night to heart.

The Spartans (13-0) advanced to the final of the Maui Interscholastic League Division II tournament with their 25-14, 25-17, 25-14 victory at the Bozich Center on the MPA campus — the tournament final is set for 7 p.m. tonight.

“You never feel completely prepared, which is good because it makes you a little hungry for the game tomorrow,” Seabury coach Brian Connor said. “And what do we see and can we execute at a high level.”

Connor spoke before Thursday’s other semifinal between No. 2 seed Lanai and No. 3 Hana.

“Whoever wins this match right here isn’t going to give us anything,” he said. “We’re going to have to execute tomorrow.”

Maui Prep completed their best season ever, finishing 8-6 in MIL play, 12-6 overall, the first time in their 13-year history they have ever finished with a winning record.

MPA coach Ryan Kirkham is also the school’s principal.

“Hands down best season, we hit a lot of milestones this year with some big wins, comeback victories,” Kirkham said. “I’m so proud of our girls, we have a really young team. Hands down, best season in Pueo volleyball history.”

Connor was certainly impressed with the home team. Avery Kirkham led Na Pueo with nine kills, 10 digs and two aces. Tessa Chin and Lauren Brown each added four kills.

“They are scrappy, I told Ryan at the beginning of the season I thought they were going to be the No. 2 (team) that was going to go with us,” Connor said. “Their serving is their biggest strength — you saw little glimpses of it today — it’s tough to run some good ball when you run into the serves that they have.”

The Spartans’ leader of the pack, as usual, was 6-foot-7 Kekua Richards, who has committed to play next season for Colorado State University. Richards had eight kills, an ace and a block. Caelyn Hasegawa had 22 assists, three blocks and three aces, Caroline Belew added four blocks, and Makalani Carey and Sofia Connor each added four kills.

The second set was tied at 15-15 before the Spartans pulled away. An ace by Mercedes Winicki gave Seabury Hall a 16-10 lead in the third set and they coasted to the win from there.

The Spartans know they will be in the state tournament next week — they can wrap up the MIL crown tonight or in a winner-take-all championship match on Saturday.

Seabury Hall alumni — including assistant coach Kaimana Brummel and athletic director Yaya Enriquez-Meyer, both former NCAA Division I players — have come in to push the Spartans in practice. Brummel suffered a broken wrist in an alumni match against the varsity.

“Oahu teams run a lot faster, so we’ve been having older players come in, we’ve had Yaya be an offensive threat at practice — it’s nice to see what it looks like when a ball gets delivered quickly,” Brian Connor said. “(Kaimana) has the will to win even if it means breaking a bone.”
