The Baldwin High School girls soccer team handed Kamehameha Maui its first loss of the season on Saturday night, defeating the Warriors 2-1 at Keopuolani Park in Kahului.
Sammie Kinoshita and Tamilyn Ebisu scored goals for the Bears, while the Warriors' scorer was Ellie Kapuaala.
The result has major ramifications for the Maui Interscholastic League race. While the Warriors (7-1-3) are still in the driver's seat for their first MIL title since 2014 -- Kamehameha can clinch by beating Lahainaluna in its season finale on Wednesday -- the Bears (6-4-1) have vaulted into contention for the league's other state berth. With 19 points, they are tied for second in the MIL standings with King Kekaulike (5-1-4), though the four-time defending MIL champion Na Alii have played one fewer match.
In the earlier boys game at Keopuolani Park, Kamehameha Maui handed MIL-leading Baldwin its first loss of the season, 1-0.
Trenton Kiesel scored on an assist from Jenson Nakasone for the Warriors (3-3-0), who got themselves back in the state tournament picture with the win.
The Bears fell to 5-1-0.
