Gentil finishes t-9th, champions crowned at Pipeline

In his debut on the World Surf League Championship Tour, Gentil finished equal-ninth after losing to South Africa's Jordy Smith 13.50-9.10. Gentil had advanced to the round of 16 earlier in the day by edging 2019 world champion and 2020 Olympic gold medalist Italo Ferreira of Brazil 7.97-7.83 in the round of 32. The Championship Tour stays on Oahu's North Shore for stop No. 2, the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, the holding period for which starts Sunday.
