Sacramento State shortstop Wehiwa Aloy, a graduate of Baldwin High School, was named the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in baseball on Wednesday.
Aloy, who last year helped lead the Bears to a state runner-up finish, was also named to the all-WAC second team after making a huge splash in his first college season for the Hornets (30-26, 14-16 WAC).
Aloy finished the regular season among the top 10 in the league in 11 different categories, while standing No. 12 in the NCAA in hits (88), No. 14 in runs scored (69) and No. 20 in total bases (155). The owner of 30 multi-hit games this season, Aloy finished the year batting a team-high .376 with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs, setting the school record for most home runs by a freshman in the program's Division I era, while leading the team in six categories and finishing second in slugging (.662), doubles (15) and home runs.
His 69 runs scored rank second on the program's single-season list behind only Brandon Marshall's 70 in 1998, and he is the first Hornet to collect 80 hits in a season since Ian Dawkins (89) in 2018. Aloy's 88 hits are tied for sixth on the school's single-season chart, while his 14 home runs are tied for 10th.
Aloy is the first Hornet to earn the league's top freshman award since Parker Brahms in 2017 and becomes the fifth Sacramento State winner overall, joining Rhys Hoskins (2012), Chris Lewis (2013), and Sam Long (2014).
