Maui’s Ian Gentil surfs during the elimination round at the VIVO Rio Pro on Friday at Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gentil, coming off a career-best semifinal finish in El Salvador, won his elimination heat 13.50-11.83 over Australian Connor O’Leary before falling to two-time world champion John John Florence of Oahu 14.17-9.90 in the round of 16. There are two more World Surf League Championship Tour events remaining — the Corona Open J-Bay (July 13-22) and the Shiseido Tahiti Pro (Aug. 11-20) — before the Rip Curl WSL Finals, set for Sept. 8-16 at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, Calif.
