Maui's Ian Gentil competes in the first quarterfinal heat at the Corona Open J-Bay on Wednesday at Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Gentil lost to Gabriel Medina of Brazil 13.50-11.93 in the heat, though his equal-fifth finish was the second-highest result in his strong rookie season on the World Surf League Championship Tour. Brazil's Filipe Toledo and California's Lakey Peterson picked up wins Wednesday at J-Bay. The next stop on the CT is the Shisheido Tahiti Pro, Aug. 11-20 -- it is the final event before the Rip Curl WSL Finals.
