Ian Gentil rides high up on a wave as he competes in the elimination round of the Corona Open J-Bay on Tuesday at Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The Maui surfer earned a pair of huge wins in the World Surf League Championship Tour event Tuesday, first knocking off former world champion Italo Ferreira 14.70-13.47 in the elimination round and then taking out current world No. 2 Griffin Colapinto 15.43-14.30 in the round of 16. "I'm just trying to surf as much J-Bay as I can," said Gentil, one of just three CT rookies to make the mid-season cut. "I probably went on waves that I shouldn't have in that (round-of-16) heat but I just couldn't help myself. I'm trying to work out all the little things before a heat to make sure the best comes out in those 30 minutes. That takes a little bit of time and I'm just happy to get a little bit better every event and every heat." In the quarterfinals, Gentil will take on three-time world champion Gabriel Medina of Brazil.
