Gentil sent to elimination round on Day 1 at J-Bay

Maui's Ian Gentil cuts back while competing in the first round of the Corona Open J-Bay on Thursday at Jeffreys Bay in Eastern Cape, South Africa. Gentil posted a two-wave score of 10.40, placing third in his three-man heat behind Brazil's Yago Dora (16.27) and Australia's Connor O'Leary (13.53). The loss sends Gentil to the elimination round of the World Surf League Championship Tour event, where he will take on former world champion and Olympic gold medalist Italo Ferreira of Brazil for a spot in the round of 16. Competition for today was called off, with the next call set for Saturday.
