Maui's Ian Gentil surfs through a barrel during the round of 16 at the Shiseido Tahiti Pro on Tuesday at Teahupoʻo, Tahiti, French Polynesia. Gentil lost to Oahu's Barron Mamiya 14.50-12.37 -- Mamiya's score included a near-perfect 9.17 -- to finish equal-ninth in the final event of the World Surf League Championship Tour's regular season. Gentil, who earlier in the day staved off elimination with an 8.00-3.17 win over South Africa's Matthew McGillivray, concludes a very successful maiden voyage on the CT. The 26-year-old from Paia made the mid-season cut and advanced to at least the round of 16 in six of 10 events; his highest finish this season was third place at the Surf City El Salvador Pro in June.
