Maui Invitational organizers say no decision yet on 2023

KemperLesnik, the organizer of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational men's college basketball tournament scheduled for Nov. 20-22 at the Lahaina Civic Center, issued a news release Monday on the current status of the event in the wake of the West Maui wildfires three weeks ago.

"Our focus has been and will continue to be on the people of Maui," the news release said. "No decision has been made yet as to the location of this year's Maui Invitational, which will be played Nov. 20-22. At the appropriate time, we will meet with Maui officials to discuss where we can best host the event in a safe and respectful manner for residents, players, staff and fans."

The LCC is still standing and has been used as a shelter and meeting place -- President Joe Biden addressed fire survivors and Lahaina residents there on Aug. 21 during his visit to observe the devastation.

The tournament has been held at the LCC since 1986, with the exception of the 2020 event that was moved to Asheville, N.C., and the 2021 tournament that was held in Las Vegas, both due to COVID restrictions.

"We know how important the Maui Invitational is to the local community, both emotionally and economically, and we are committed to hosting an event that will celebrate, respect and honor the aloha spirit," the news release continued. "Our Tournament 'ohana extends our deepest condolences to the entire community and will mālama Maui --now and always."
