The Oregon State University women's basketball team will provide fans with an opportunity to support Maui wildfire relief through donations to the non-profit Hope Chapel at its October 29 exhibition game against Western Washington in Corvallis, Ore.
The game features free admission, but fans will have a chance to support the community on Maui with an optional donation.
The Beavers host the Maui Classic annually and this season the event will include Texas Tech, Tulsa and Southeastern Louisiana on Dec. 19-20. Oregon State will play Southeastern Louisiana on Dec. 19 and Texas Tech on Dec. 20 -- there are two games scheduled for each day.
The donations will support Hope Chapel's emergency, short-term programs that help families in crisis as the community recovers from the wildfires.
"One big part of our program is our Maui tournament, the Maui Classic. It's a longstanding relationship with the amazing people and community on Maui. Of course, tragedy struck this year, so we are providing an opportunity for our fans to donate to Maui support through Hope Chapel." Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck said in a news release from the school. "This is a way for Beaver Nation to step up for the people of Maui."
Oregon State is hosting the event here for the seventh time -- the location for this season's event is still to be announced. The tournament is hosted by OSU and Vertical Sports Maui, a local non-profit that runs youth sports events.
Community service is an important part of the trip each year. The four participating teams volunteer annually with local schools to put on basketball clinics, assemblies and-or reading programs.
