Maui surfers Jackson Bunch (in photo), Imaikalani deVault (second photo) and Eli Hanneman (third photo) are shown competing during the EDP Vissla Ericeira Pro, which wrapped up Sunday in Portugal. The event was the fifth of six on the Challenger Series, which will award 10 spots among the men for next year’s World Surf League Championship Tour. DeVault improved his chances with an equal-ninth finish in Portugal and enters the season-ending Corona Saquarema Pro in seventh place in the Challenger standings. Right behind him in eighth is Hanneman, who took an early exit last week but is in good position following his big win at the U.S. Open of Surfing in early August. Bunch had the best finish among the Maui surfers in Portugal — he eliminated deVault in the round of 16 before bowing out in the quarterfinals — and the result moved him up eight spots into 22nd place in the Challenger standings. The holding period for the Corona Saquarema Pro in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, starts Saturday.

Starting at $4.62/week.
