UH men fall to CSUN 76-66

The University of Hawaii men's basketball team dropped to 1-2 in Big West Conference competition after a 76-66 loss to Cal State Northridge on Saturday in Northridge, Calif.

JoVon McClanahan had a season-high 23 points to lead UH in the loss, which came in a back-and-forth affair that featured 14 ties and 13 lead changes. Noel Coleman added 13 points and Justin McKoy scored 12.

After the teams battled to a 37-37 tie in the first half, the lead continued to seesaw until midway through the second half. After a layup by Bernardo da Silva put the Rainbow Warriors (9-6) up 55-53 with 9:44 to go, the Matadors went on a 6-0 run to lead 59-55 as UH went cold behind the arc. While it remained close, CSUN (12-3-0 Big West) did not surrender the lead and eventually pulled away.

Hawaii shot 32.8 percent overall, 28.9 percent (11 of 38) from the 3-point line.

Later Saturday, the UH women's basketball team improved to 3-0 in Big West play by dominating CSUN 67-38 in Honolulu.

The Rainbow Wahine (6-6) hit 10 3-pointers and had a 29-2 run spanning the second and third quarters to take control of the game against the Matadors (2-11, 0-3).

Daejah Phillips hit all three of her 3-point attempts and finished with 12 points for UH. Kelsie Imai added 11 points and Lily Wahinekapu had 10.

UH next plays UC Irvine on Thursday, the men at home and the women on the road.
