UH men, women pick up wins against Bakersfield

JoVon McClanahan scored 19 points and Bernardo da Silva and Justin McKoy each added 18 to lead the University of Hawaii men's basketball team to a 78-67 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday in Bakersfield, Calif.

Noel Coleman added 11 points to help the Rainbow Warriors end a three-game losing streak and notch their first Big West Conference win of the season.

UH (9-5, 1-1 Big West) led for most of the game, jumping out to a 41-23 lead in the first half behind 64 percent shooting (16 of 26). The Rainbow Warriors shot 44.4 percent overall.

Da Silva also had a team-high eight rebounds for Hawaii, which held a 35-23 advantage on the boards to help overcome 15 turnovers.

The Rainbow Warriors' lead grew to as many as 23 points with 14:30 remaining. The Roadrunners was able to get their deficit to single digits late -- 76-67 with 29 seconds on the clock -- but would get no closer.

Dalph Panopio scored 23 points to lead CSU Bakersfield (5-9, 0-3). Corey Stephenson added 15 points and Kaleb Higgins had 13.

On Thursday night in Honolulu, the UH women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in Big West play with a 67-43 rout of CSU Bakersfield.

The Rainbow Wahine (5-6) led wire-to-wire and essentially put the game away in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 21-5 lead. The Roadrunners didn't get much closer the rest of the way, trailing 36-14 at halftime before UH led most of the second half by at least 24 points.

Lily Wahinekapu scored 15 points and Imani Perez added 10 to lead Hawaii, which shot 45.1 percent from the field. Brooklyn Rewers chipped in nine points and Daejah Phillips had seven points and 10 rebounds as UH beat CSU Bakersfield on the boards 41-30.

The Roadrunners (4-8, 1-2) had a tough night shooting, going 16 of 59 (27.1 percent). Shaunae Brown led them with 13 points.

Both UH teams next play Cal State Northridge on Saturday, the men on the road and the women at home.
