Loree, Riglos finish impressive runs to MIL golf crowns

By Robert Collias 5 min read

MAKENA -- For Tyler Loree and Anessa Riglos, this is becoming a habit.

Loree, a Seabury Hall junior, and Riglos, a Hawaii Technoiogy Academy junior who plays for Baldwin, both finished impressive runs to their second straight Maui Interscholastic League individual golf championships on Saturday at Makena Golf Club.

Loree won the boys title after posting a 65-75-70-75--285, 3-under-par total at the Waiehu Municipal, Royal Kaanapali, King Kamehameha and Makena courses over the last two weekends.

"I feel like I played great," Loree said moments before donning a championship gold medal. "All four courses were in great shape. I just hit the ball really well all week, putted really well, took advantage of the par-5s, but it means so much to win this two years in a row.

"The MIL is so good, the competitiveness. The MIL is just well-run, too. It's just, like, everyone looks forward to the end of the season for the MILs. It's an awesome event and it's the highlight of the season, for sure. So, it's awesome to win it two years in a row."

Loree beat MIL runner-up Renner Chumley by six strokes and Chris Salem was seven more strikes back in third. Chumley and Salem each lead the deep Maui Prep that has been state champion and runner-up over the last two years.

Now, all of the MIL individual and team medalists are looking forward to the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA state tournament April 30-May 1 at the Kaneohe Kilpper Course on Oahu.

Loree, who has verbally committed to play collegiately at UCLA, was the state runner-up last year -- the MIL has only one boys individual state high school champion ever, Maui High's William Coelho in 1988.

"I've been looking for it for awhile," Loree said of the run at the state title. "Since freshman year I've wanted to win a state title. That would be awesome if I could do it. I mean, I'm playing good golf right now, so I'm just looking to keep it going and just see how it goes."

Chumley was impressed with Loree as the two played three of the four rounds together.

"He's incredible, even on my good days he's still a little better," Chumley said. "I have got to give it to him, he's just the better player."

Chuimley smiled widely when asked about his sister Tehya Chumley, who was the MIL girls runner-up to Riglos.

"Honestly, I'm more happy for her getting second than me," Renner Chumley said. "She definitely deserved it and, yeah, I'm just super happy for her."

Riglos was a dominant wire-to-wire winner of the MIL girls individual title at 75-75-73-73--296. Riglos won the crown by 15 strokes.

"I feel like last year was a great learning experience for me. I had a lot of ups and downs last year," Riglos said. "This year, the key for me was consistency. I shot all rounds in the 70s, I played well. Not too many mistakes, only one double bogey, but the difference was the putting this year."

Riglos was the only MIL girls individual medalist at state last season, finishing ninth. She will be riding some momentum from four tough MIL rounds in a nine-day span.

"It does give me confidence, I did see improvement from last year and I want to continue working on my putting and my short game," she said. "That's where I've seen the most improvement."

Riglos hopes to play NCAA Division I golf and she said being on a list of MIL champions who have done just that is giving her motivation going forward. She only picked up golf for the first time during the pandemic with a little inspiration from her dad.

"I look to be like one of them," Riglos said of following in the footsteps of former MIL champions who have played NCAA D-I golf. "And I've been seeing improvements towards reaching that kind of goal, as high as they did."
