Six wrestlers from Maui victorious at state tournament

Kamehameha Schools-Maui senior Mikah Labuanan defeats Lahainaluna freshman Anakin Hayes in the 150-pound Maui Interscholastic League championship match. Labuanan won the state championship at the HHSAA state tournament on Feb. 21-22.
Six wrestlers from Maui — four boys and two girls — claimed state titles at the 2025 Hawaii High School Athletic Association Wrestling State Championships on Feb. 21-22 at Neal Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu.
With two individual state champions for each the boys and the girls teams, Baldwin scored more team points than any other Maui school as the Bears girls finished fourth with 132.5 points and the boys took fifth with 85.5.
Baldwin’s champions included senior Bryson Adric at 157 pounds and junior Pita Takafua at 285 pounds for the boys, as well as junior Te`ata Mata`afa Grove at 135 pounds and senior Jahlia Miguel at 170 pounds for the girls.
Close behind Baldwin, the boys team from Kamehameha Schools Maui finished sixth with 83.5 team points and two state champions of its own — junior Blake Abernathy and senior Mikah Labuanan.
In their respective championship matches, Takafua won 3-2 in an ultimate tie-breaker over Pearl City junior Ku Miner, and Adric won in an 14-4 major decision over Roosevelt senior Cole Rodriguez.
At 138 pounds, Abernathy defeated junior Daniel Tauyan of Leilehua 5-3 in the championship match, while Labuanan pinned senior Samson Paaluhi of Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama at 1:52 for the 150-pound title.
In the girls championship matches, Grove, a junior, beat senior Paige Taasan of Hilo 14-8, and Miguel pinned Farrington senior Alazhandra Williams at 1:00.
In the boys match for third place at 138 pounds, King Kekaulike senior Kanoa Iwankiw scored a 146 major decision over sophomore Miles Higgins of Moanalua. In the 106-pound weight class, freshman Jalen Adric of Baldwin beat sophomore Jared Gonda-Young of Nanakuli in a 7-6 decision to take fifth.
KS-Maui junior Kia`ikūle`a Kalipi took sixth at 157 pounds. Junior Ryder Armitage secured the best placement among the Lahainaluna boys after finishing third at 113 pounds. Armitage scored a 17-2 technical fall over Saint Louis School junior Kahiwa Kamaka at 4:57. Lahainaluna senior Jackson Hussey finished sixth.
Molokai’s Jona Dudoit (120 pounds) and Elisha “Horner (175 pounds) lead the way for the Farmers. Dudoit was third at state. He pinned Charles John Hao of Kamehameha Schools Hawaii at 2:05, while Horner took fifth.
Maui High saw two wrestlers place at state. Senior Tony Passetti won third place at 165 pounds and Tovis Cacal, also a senior, took sixth at 126 pounds. Passetti faced Baldwin junior Niko Takitani in the match for third place and won 4-1 while Takitani finished in fourth place.
Also finishing in fourth place was Titan Nitahara of Kamehameha Schools Maui at 175 pounds.
Among the girls wrestlers, sophomore Tiale Tancayo of Molokai finished fourth and junior Chaela Gantala of Baldwin took fifth at 115 pounds.
Among the 120 pound female wrestlers, senior Kanoelani Kekiwi-Jones of King Kekaulike took third. She defeated Olalikaipolaumaile Akioka of Kailua 13-6. Sophomore Sanairee Hasegawa of Baldwin won fifth place after pinning Punahou senior Erika Olkowski at 1:23.
Piikea Joy, a senior from Baldwin, took second place, falling to senior Jax Realin of Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama at 2:38.
At 135 pounds, Mahealani Vares of Kamehameha Schools Maui finished fourth.
The top female wrestler from Lahainaluna was Siana Boaz-Vasquez, who took third at 140 pounds. She beat Elena Beauchamp-Estrella of Kamehameha Schools Maui 9-3 in the match to decide third and fourth place.
Lakota Kamaka of Baldwin was fourth and Gabrielle Salas of Kulanihako`i finished in fourth and sixth place, respectively, in the 145-pounds bracket.
At 190 pounds, senior Masina Borden-Phillips of Molokai pinned Nalei Meyers of Waianaea at 2:43 to finish third.
