Hawaii boxer Lorenzo Patricio has won a World Cup Boxing title, marking a major milestone for the Patricio family, the Maui boxing community and Team USA.
According to Team USA, Patricio is the first American to win a gold medal at the World Boxing Cup.
Patricio, who is coached by his father, Lyndon Patricio, captured the gold medal in the men’s 55kg weight class in the tournament, and the title reflects years of discipline, sacrifice and dedication to the sport.
“There are paths available that can lead to meaningful achievements and personal satisfaction,” Lyndon Patricio said. “I see a bright and successful future for Lorenzo Patricio. He showed that his discipline, hard work and determination is highly likely to achieve success.”
Lorenzo Patricio is a member of the USA Boxing Elite High Performance Team, where he trains alongside many of the nation’s top amateur boxers while competing in high-level events.
The program has also given him opportunities to travel internationally, compete against some of the world’s top boxers and attend elite training camps.
“One of the best parts is being on the team with a lot of my teammates that I came up with through the youth level,” Patricio said. “We’ve been with each other and competing together for awhile, so now being on the Elite team together is really special. We’ve built a strong bond over the years, and we’re more than just teammates, we’re like brothers. We push each other every day, support each other through everything, and having that chemistry makes training and competing even better.”
Patricio said he is grateful for the opportunity to learn from the USA Boxing coaching staff while continuing to train under his father, saying both have helped him continue to develop as a boxer.
While winning the World Cup title was an important milestone, Patricio said he views it as another step toward his long-term goal of becoming an Olympic champion.
“Winning this gold medal meant a lot because it showed that all the hard work, sacrifices and preparation are paying off,” Patricio said. “This competition had some of the best international talent, so coming out on top gave me a lot of confidence in where I’m at.”
Patricio’s next major competition is the Pan American Games in Mexico City, where he hopes to win another gold medal while continuing his pursuit of a spot on Team USA’s Olympic roster.
Patricio said he understands there is still plenty of work ahead.
However, with a focus on improvement, gaining experience at the international level and developing as an athlete and a competitor, he plans to take each competition one step at a time as he works toward earning his place on the Olympic team.
