Lanai rallied from a first-quarter deficit to defeat Molokai 34-28 in the Pine Lads' season-opener Saturday at Molokai.
In the eight-player Maui Interscholastic League football game, Ky-Mani Benanua scored four touchdowns for the Pine Lads, including three rushing touchdowns and a 45-yard punt return.
Molokai took an 8-0 lead on the final play of the first quarter when Makena Kahale scored on a 4-yard run and Ikua Hanchett added the two-point conversion.
Benanua put Lanai on the scoreboard with a 27-yard touchdown run with 7:17 remaining in the second quarter. Madden Loo answered with an 8-yard touchdown run that gave Molokai a 14-6 advantage.
Benanua's 45-yard punt return with 1:40 left in the half pulled the Pine Lads within 14-12.
Benanua scored on a 24-yard run early in the third quarter, giving Lanai its first lead at 18-14. Kalo Nakayama's 6-yard touchdown run put Molokai back in front 20-18 before Matt Elaydo connected with Steele Kanno for a 13-yard touchdown with 17 seconds remaining in the quarter. Elaydo then found Blaze Burkett for the two-point conversion, giving Lanai a 26-20 lead.
Benanua added a 14-yard touchdown run with 4:04 remaining in the fourth quarter, and Burkett ran in the conversion to extend Lanai's lead to 34-20.
Nakayama scored on an 8-yard run and added the two-point conversion with 1:27 remaining.
