The Seabury Hall boys cross country team turned in Maui County’s top performance at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Cross Country Championships on Saturday, finishing second in Division II behind Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

The Spartans totaled 44 points while Hawaii Prep had 25. In third place, Hawaii Baptist Academy finished with 53 points.

Seabury Hall was led by Silas Miller-Yodar and Brady Punu, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the combined Division I and II individual standings at Hawaii Preparatory Academy. The boys and girls races each featured 200 runners, with competitors from both divisions racing together.

Miller-Yoder, who won the Maui Interscholastic League championship Oct. 24 at Baldwin High School, said he considers this season his breakout year.

After beginning his high school cross country career without qualifying for the state championships, Miller-Yodar found his way to the top of the podium throughout the season en route to winning the league title.

On Saturday, Miller-Yodar completed the course in 17 minutes, 40 seconds, while Punu finished in 17:44. They were second and third among Division II runners, trailing only Hawaii Prep’s Philipp Gerstegarbe, who finished fourth overall in 17:37.

Reflecting on his progression, Miller-Yodar said learning to embrace discomfort, whether through physical pain, health challenges or injuries, and that's helped him recognize that progress and the process go hand in hand.

"I was very sick the morning of the race, making the whole event feel like a Michael Jordan-flu game, in stride making me faster," said Miller-Yoder. "When you enjoy the process like that, it doesn’t become work. This championship result meant a lot because I had never run in an MIL Championship before, and it was the same course (at Baldwin High School), which the year prior I had ended up walking to the finish line and eventually collapsing. I kind of felt like I had to give the course some revenge."

For Punu, this cross country season has had few, if any, downsides.

He said he is grateful for the support system behind him, and he saw significant improvements in his performance, while becoming an integral part of the team’s overall success.

"This championship result for me is not just a win or a second-place finish. This result made me realize how far I’ve come and how much work I’ve put in to make it this far," said Punu. "My brother Brendan, who is leaving the team this year -- he is a senior -- has helped me be successful as well."

Also for the Spartans, Remi Kuriger placed 38th overall in 19:17, Asher Kingdon was 55th in 19:35 and Kingston Thayer finished 94th in 20:14. Seabury Hall’s Brendan Punu also finished 111th in 20:25, while Wesley Kosaka was 150th in 21:32.
