Unearth your parachute pants, tease that big hair and grab your brightest, whitest kicks for Lahaina Cooler’s 1980’s-themed 30th anniversary party this Monday, Sept. 30.

In addition to happy hour prices from opening to close and, as always, great eats, there will be prizes for best costume and a surprise or two. A DJ will be spinning ’80’s tunes and the bar will serve ’80’s priced liquors. Music, contests and other festivities will kick off around 5 p.m.

Over the last three decades, Lahaina Coolers has evolved — and it’s stayed the same, says Sean Stover, who functions as both general manager and supervising chef.

“I’ve changed the menu a little bit here and there, but there are still dishes from the original owners that have stayed on the menu due to popularity,” he says.

The bar has also evolved from a surfboard motif to its current state, and instead of a tiny TV in the corner, the locale is outfitted with several flat screen TVs for sports viewing.

The restaurant still serves food until 11:45 p.m., which makes it a hotspot for hungry locals in the hospitality and restaurant industry when they get off of work.

For those unfortunate souls not in the know about Lahaina Coolers, it’s an open-air restaurant and bar with a neighborhood feel — think Cheers with great food and an aloha spirit enlivened by locals and visitors savvy enough to find it away from the bustle of Front Street.

Just look for the record 955-pound blue-striped marlin displayed with pride and a rainbow canopy of colorful paper lanterns fluttering on the shady lanai.
