The Maui Interscholastic League postponed all but one of its events slated for today, due to severe weather concerns.
The one exception was the crucial Division II boys basketball game between Lanai and Maui Prep, a second-place playoff that was won by Maui Prep 51-47, at Lahainaluna.
The result sends MPA to a play-in game with the Big Island Interscholastic Federation runner-up next Saturday for the final spot in the Heide & Cooke/HHSAA D-II state tournament Feb. 8-10 on Oahu.
The decision to play the basketball game was based on the travel challenges involving Lanai.
The first-round game in the MIL D-I boys basketball tournament, King Kekaulike at Maui High, was moved from Saturday to Monday at 7 p.m. at Maui High’s Shine Matsui Athletic Center — the Maui High girls will host Radford in a Heide & Cooke/HHSAA D-I state tournament game at 4 p.m. on Monday.
The MIL D-I boys tournament semifinals that were originally to be played Monday have been pushed to 5:30 and 7 p.m. Tuesday. The MIL tournament final is now Wednesday and an if-necessary playoff game for either the overall title or second place will be Thursday.
“All MIL events for today have been cancelled and will be rescheduled if necessary and/or when possible,” the league said in a news release, prior to the basketball game decisions. “Thank you for your understanding and continued support of our MIL student-athletes.”
The events that were postponed include the MIL Swimming and Diving Championships at the Kihei Aquatic Center. League officials said they have requested a permit from Maui County Parks and Recreation to hold the event Wednesday at the KAC.
Other events postponed Saturday include: MIL wrestling round-robin meet No. 3 at Hana; and boys soccer, Seabury Hall boys at Maui High and King Kekaulike at Kamehameha Maui.
