When land and water are taken from a people, and then their culture, language, ceremonies and entire way of life, they become a people disconnected and lost, cut off from everything that defined them as a people, that told them who they were.
The rest of us have little understanding of the depth of this loss. On average, we move every five years and have little or no connection to where our people are buried or the land they lived and walked on. We, who are truly homeless.
When this happens, a shadow falls upon the land and all its people. For those who are now without home or culture, it shows up as a grief with no end, layered with anger, resentment and a hole always needing to be filled.
For the takers, the shadow shows up as a mostly unconscious shame and guilt, avoidance and denial.
Maui, the State of Hawaii and its people now have a tremendous opportunity to take steps to start to lift and dispel this shadow. This opportunity could be the result of the fire that burned and destroyed Lahaina.
Can we please hand over all that is to rise again into the hands of Hawaiians and their kupuna? Can we please not see money, power, greed and backroom deals be business as usual?
Business as usual is what's killing the world.
So much of Maui and Hawaii's future turns on how this story plays out.
