Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum seeks items from 1880s Scandinavian arrival
On Oct. 11, the Drammen City Archives in Drammen, Norway, hosted a ceremony to honor the gifting of a small Drammen photo book dating from 1880 and a copy of the new Scandinavian and Hawai’i plaque that was recently donated to the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum in Pu’unene.
According to a news release, the photo book has returned home 144 years after it left Drammen Harbor with migrating Norwegians, while the plaque tells the story of the Scandinavian immigrants recruited by the Hawaiian government to labor for Hawai’i plantations.
The Sugar Museum is developing an exhibit to be presented in February celebrating the 1881 Scandinavian arrival and early Scandinavian life in Hawai’i. If anyone has objects or photos to share or loan that will help tell the story, they can contact Holly Buland at operations@sugarmuseum.com or call 808-871-8058.
