Maui County emergency officials performed a mountain rescue Thursday morning after a 72-year-old male hiker fell and injured his leg.
According to the Maui Fire Department, a rescue engine and aircraft were deployed around 9:59 a.m. to the Waihee Ridge Trail. Rescuers aboard the aircraft found the hiker and were able to lift the individual out of the area.
Christopher Stankis, public information officer with the Maui Fire Department, said this was not the first rescue of the year.
"MFD responds to missing and injured hikers in various parts of the island on an almost daily basis," he said. "Some are just assisted back to the road by firefighters; some need to be airlifted out as was done (Thursday)."
Stankis also reminded the public to not hike alone.
"Hike on known, marked, legal trails. Hike within your limits. Choose hikes that are within your fitness and skill level," he said. "Carry adequate water, a fully charged cell phone and, if possible, a small power bank to extend battery life of your phone. Be aware of the current and forecast weather conditions for the area you will be hiking in."
