‘Unpredictable’ free agency is on tap around the NHL as part of a fast-tracked and busy offseason

NHL free agency opens Monday, less than a week since Commissioner Gary Bettman presented the Stanley Cup to the Florida Panthers. The offseason comes at you fast, and with all of it packed into a short period of time and more extra money to spend since before the pandemic, general managers are not quite sure what’s to come when the free agent frenzy gets underway. “It’s going to be unpredictable, really,” San Jose general manager Mike Grier said Saturday on NHL Network. “It’ll be interesting. Every team’s trying to get better, and there’s only so many seats at the ...

NHRA drag racing great John Force shows improvement

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — NHRA drag racing great John Force suffered a traumatic brain injury in a fiery, 300 mph crash at the Virginia Nationals a week ago but is showing “daily signs of improvement” in a neurological intensive care unit, according to his team. John Force Racing said Sunday that the 75-year-old Force initially couldn’t follow commands to open his eyes, squeeze the hands of care providers or move his extremities following the crash. After five days of heavy sedation, he began to gain momentum, including being able to respond to commands such as giving a thumbs-up ...

Logano wins at Nashville in record 5th overtime for 1st Cup Series win of year

LEBANON, Tenn. (AP) — Joey Logano stretched his fuel enough to hold off a group of pursuers at the finish line Sunday night and win the Ally 400 in a NASCAR Cup Series record fifth overtime. Logano held off a charge by Tyler Reddick, then beat Zane Smith, Reddick, Ryan Preece and Chris Buescher to the line in a race that started nearly six hours earlier at Nashville Superspeedway and went 31 laps longer than the 300 that were scheduled. “It’s a much-needed win for sure,” a smiling and relieved Logano said of his first victory this year and 33rd of his career. It looked like ...

The Squad could use some quality control

Jamaal Bowman’s loss was the Democrats’ gain. A member of the left-fringe Squad, his primary defeat removes at least one irritant to the Democrats’ quest to take control of the House. And if his replacement with a moderate marks the beginning of the end for the Squad, well, bravo for the victor, Westchester County executive George Latimer. New York’s 16th Congressional District includes some New York suburbs plus a slice of the Bronx. Squad founder Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the old Socialist Bernie Sanders thought it a good idea to hold a rally for Bowman in the South Bronx. ...

With Sarr and Risacher in the mix for No. 1 pick, NBA draft could be ‘special’

NEW YORK — Alex Sarr was born in France and spent last season playing in Australia. Zaccharie Risacher was born in Spain and is coming off a breakout season in France. The next step in their global basketball journey is the NBA, with one of them potentially heading to Atlanta on Wednesday night as the No. 1 pick in the draft. “We grew up together, competing against each other, and now we are here in New York for the draft and it’s one day to realize our dream, you know?” Risacher said Tuesday. “So this is special.” It’s a special time for France, which could have the ...

Vitello teams that played with attitude, edge laid foundation for Vols’ national title

OMAHA, Neb. — Winning the national championship validated what already was increasingly obvious. Tennessee is the standard bearer in this era of college baseball. The Volunteers’ first national title in the sport was the culmination of a seven-year climb from SEC irrelevance to national dominance under Tony Vitello, whose team finished its latest College World Series run with a 6-5 win over Texas A&M in the third and deciding game of the finals Monday night. “We had unfinished business, especially this being the third time we’ve been here in the last four years,” pitcher ...
