HONOLULU - The Hawaii Board of Education is increasing the pay for assistant superintendents.The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the board voted Tuesday to increase the salaries of six assistant superintendents by an average of 3.6 percent.Salaries of 15 complex-area superintendents also will increase but by less than 1 percent on average.The board approved a 16.6 percent increase for the deputy superintendent.BOE Chairman Don Horner says the one-time pay increases are for performance and the board is appreciative of their accomplishments.Assistant superintendents had earned $115,000 to ...

HALEIWA- Kamehameha Schools says it will break ground next month on a $16 million redevelopment of the Oahu North Shore business district that includes Matsumoto's Shave Ice.The trust said Monday the Haleiwa shave ice stand popular with tourists and residents will remain open during construction.The project will reuse five historic buildings, including the one housing Matsumoto's.The redevelopment will add 95 parking stalls in a lot behind storefronts and public restrooms.It's being designed to move lines of shave ice customers away from busy Kamehameha Highway.

Man sentenced to 4 years for wire fraudHONOLULU - A Kaneohe man convicted of creating a Ponzi scheme has been sentenced to four years in prison.KITV-TV reports Jason Pascua also was ordered to pay more than $1 million in restitution.Pascua in May pleaded guilty to fleecing 31 Hawaii families out of about $1.5 million over three years. He promised returns of 25 to 50 percent for investing in his company, J2 Productions, which promoted concerts. Some investors received money came from the investments of others.
