Modern Honolulu workers OK strikeHONOLULU - A group of 260 union workers at the Modern Honolulu hotel in Waikiki have authorized leaders to call for a strike.The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Friday that no date has been set for a strike.Unite Here Local 5 is representing the workers in negotiations with hotel management.

Median home price down in HonoluluHONOLULU - The Honolulu Board of Realtors said the median price of single-family homes on Oahu was down 4 percent to $600,000 in February, compared with the same month a year ago.The board said in monthly statistics Thursday that there were also fewer sales last month than in February 2012.The condominium market, however, is up. Officials seek Tokyo-Kona flights

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Tourism Authority is working to have Japan Airlines fly 10 flights from Tokyo's Narita airport to Kailua-Kona this summer in hopes they sell well and lead the carrier to restore regularly scheduled service to the Big Island.HTA Brand Management Vice President David Uchiyama said Wednesday that the grounding of Boeing 787 aircraft is creating uncertainty for the plan. Hawaii House, Senate vote to increase minimum wage

HONOLULU - The Hawaii state House and the Senate have approved separate proposals to raise the state minimum wage.The initiative comes just weeks after President Barack Obama announced a plan to raise the national minimum wage to $9 an hour.The Senate bill would gradually increase minimum wage to $9.25 in two years and fix the wage to the consumer price index starting in 2016.The House proposal is less ambitious, raising the wage to $9 by 2017. 3 Walmart stores have solar powerThree Walmart stores statewide - including the one in Kahului - have new solar power arrays on their rooftops.Walmart and SunEdison announced Wednesday the completion of the new solar power installations. During the first full year of production, the 311-kilowatt solar power rooftop system on each store will produce more than 400,000 kilowatt hours of solar electricity.Each rooftop system will eliminate 320 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, a news release said.
