Former judge Richard Bissen and incumbent Mayor Michael Victorino were neck and neck in the Maui County mayoral race with the first release of results in the primary election on Saturday night. Bissen had 9,763 votes, or 35.8 percent, with Victorino at 9,086 votes, or 33.3 percent, the top two candidates so far in a crowded field of eight. Incumbent Council Member Tasha Kama led challenger Buddy Nobriga by just over 200 votes in a field of seven candidates for the Maui County Council's Kahului residency seat, according to the first results released by the state Office of Elections on Saturday night. Mahina Poepoe, the only Molokai candidate in the House District 13 race, was leading incumbent Rep. Linda Clark in the Democratic primary for House District 13 that covers East Maui, Molokai and Lanai, according to the first set of results released by the state Office of Elections on Saturday night. Poepoe had 1,372 votes, or 39.9 percent, to Clark's 1,051 votes, or 30.5 percent, followed by Chase Nomura with 557 votes, or 16.2 percent. Josh Green wins Hawaii’s Democratic primary for governor

HONOLULU (AP) -- Lt. Gov. Josh Green on Saturday won the Democratic primary for Hawaii governor, defeating U.S. Rep. Kaiali’i Kahele and former Hawaii first lady Vicky Cayetano. Green has served as second-in-command to Hawaii Gov. David Ige for the past four years. Ige has served two four-year terms and is ineligible to run again. Maui County mayoral candidate and former judge Richard Bissen solidified his lead in the primary on Saturday night and appeared headed for the general election with incumbent Mayor Michael Victorino. Bissen had 10,028 votes, or 35.2 percent, followed by Victorino at 9,223 votes, or 32.4 percent, as of the second printout, which was released at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
