HONOLULU - A former teller for the Honolulu bus system credit union has been sentenced to 13 months in prison for embezzling more than $350,000.The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports 41-year-old Jenny Nishida was sentenced Monday in federal court and ordered to pay restitution of $330,459 to the OTS Employees Federal Credit Union's insurer.Oahu Transit Services operates the city bus system.Nishida in May pleaded guilty to making 122 illegal payments into credit card accounts belonging to her or her family from 2009 to 2011.Credit union board Vice Chairman Luis Navarro says it's the ...

Big Island businesses eligible for disaster loans

HONOLULU - The U.S. Small Business Administration says small businesses in Hawaii County may apply for low-interest federal disaster loans because of Tropical Storm Iselle.The agency said Thursday the loans will offset economic losses suffered because of wind, rain, and flooding on Aug. 7.Businesses may apply for up to $2 million in loans to meet financial obligations and operating expenses.Those eligible include small, nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives and small businesses engaged in aquaculture.
