LAUNCH OF MAUI’S OWN SAILING CANOE AT MALA
From noon to 4 p.m., Mala Wharf in Lahaina will be in the center of Hawaiian culture as the Mo’okiha o Pi’ilani’s launch ceremony will transpire, starting at noon with speeches by the governor, mayor, kupuna and visiting dignitaries. At 2:30 p.m. Maui canoe clubs will prepare for the launch that will happen at the rising tide upon Captain Tim Gilliom’s command. There will be photo ops galore. At 5 p.m, go to the public hoolaulea at Old Lahaina Lu’au on Front Street with music by Eric Gilliom, Amy Hanaiali’i, Marty Dread, Da Ukulele Boys, cast of ‘Ulalena, ‘Aiona, and Old Lahaina Lu’au performers.
