FIRST WRITER & READER SYMPOSIUM IN KIHEI

Debuting in Kihei at Kono’s on the Green, the Writer & Reader Symposium will open at 9 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. after a question-and-answer session. MAUI’S NEW CHAMBER ORCHESTRA TO DEBUT

The Maui Chamber Orchestra will present its debut concert at 7:30 this evening and 3 p.m. Sunday in Wailuku’s Historic Iao Theater. Coined “The Birth of an Orchestra,” the concert will feature the Maui Masterworks Chorale. Cost is $25 to $45 for adults; half-price for students with valid ID. LANAI SLACK KEY GUITAR FEST AT FOUR SEASONS

Four Seasons Resorts will postpone the free fourth annual Lanai Slack Key Guitar Festival, a tribute to Hawaiian legend Dennis Kamakahi, featuring Kevin Brown, Benny Uyetake, Damon Parillo and Darren Lopez. The performances would have been held at the Lodge at Koele at 7 p.m. tonight; 6 p.m. Saturday; and with Brown only at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. The musicians also would have played in Lanai City. PHIL & THE BLANX WILL PERFORM IN PAIA, KIHEI

Featuring ace drummer Bud Gaugh from Sublime, Phil & The Blanx will play along with roots reggae band Dubfounded at 10 tonight at Charley’s in Paia. The cost is $10. All the musicians will also play at Diamonds Bar in Kihei on Saturday.

LAHAINA’S 2nd FRIDAY TOWN PARTY CANCELED

Scheduled activities have been canceled due to inclement weather, including the Second Friday Town Party at Campbell Park, the Poster Contest and its reception at Old Lahaina Jail Gallery; and the Summer Block Party stretching from Papalaua Street to Lahainaluna Road.

CHEF SERIES DINNER AT ALAN WONG’S AMASIA

AUTHOR TO READ ‘REPO SHARK’ CRIME NOVEL

Maui author Cody Goodfellow will read from and discuss his new Hawaii-based crime novel, “Repo Shark,” at 4 p.m. in Maui Friends of the Library store in Kahului. Local artist Frank Walls will display his prints and paint the faces of those who fall asleep during the reading.
