Maui’s most famous visitors – the humpback whales, of course – will be celebrated Saturday at the 36th Annual World Whale Day and Parade of Whales.
The Pacific Whale Foundation’s day of festivities will kick off with a parade along South Kihei Road featuring revelers in sea character costumes as well as ocean-themed floats created by community organizations, schools and local businesses. The parade is free and open to all spectators and participants.
World Whale Day happenings will continue until 6 p.m. at Kalama Park with a lineup of some of Hawaii’s top entertainers, including Willie K, John Cruz, HAPA, Marty Dread, Amy Hanaiali’i, George Kahumoku Jr., Cyril Pahinui and Manutea Nui E.
There will be also be plenty of entertainment for children, including bouncy castles, games, cotton candy, shave ice and other treats. Local restaurants and food trucks will be serving up food for sale, and there will be a farm-to-table market.
Local artists will be showcasing their wares at the Made on Maui fair, and environmental groups and “green” businesses promoting the preservation of Maui’s natural resources will be featured.
World Whale Day is free for children 12 and younger and $5 for others. There will be free off-site parking and shuttles to Kalama Park all day.
