Spend a day with dad at the Maui Film Festival benefit encore screenings on Father’s Day

The Maui Film Festival presents four audience award winners in special encore benefit screenings in honor of Father’s Day starting at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for children 12 and younger, or $25 for any two admissions. (Complimentary tickets and passes are not valid for Maui Film Festival fundraisers.)

The beneficiaries are Doorway Into Light, Mana’o Hana Hou Radio, Maui Surfrider Foundation and Hui O Wa’a Kaulua. For more details, visit www.mauifilmfestival.com.

* “Visions in the Dark: the Life of Pinky Thompson” NR, 1:30. Documentary, biography, drama. Screening is at 2 p.m.

A fascinating documentary that shines a spotlight on the life of the eponymous man who mostly worked behind the scenes during the Hawaiian Renaissance of the late 20th century. His great legacy lives on through his influential work as a social worker and community leader, including his leadership posts at the Kamehameha Schools and the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

* “Landfill Harmonic” NR, 1:24. Documentary, biography, drama. Screening is at 4 p.m.

A beautiful story about the transformative power of music that highlights two vital issues of our times: poverty and waste pollution. Learn about the lives of children living in a slum built on a landfill in Paraguay who create an orchestra made of trash, The Recycled Orchestra, and tour the world, finally realizing their wildest dream: to play with the heavy metal band, Megadeth.

* “Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet” NR, 1:24. Animation. Screening is at 6 p.m.

Inspired by the classic book by Kahlil Gibran, “The Prophet” is an animated feature film, with “chapters” from animation directors from around the world. Starring Liam Neeson, Salma Hayek and John Krasinski.

* “The Wave I Ride” NR, 1:39. Documentary. Screening is at 8 p.m.

A documentary following big-wave surfer Paige Alms, who grew up with the true spirit of aloha planted in her heart and an ever-present love of the ocean woven into the tapestry of her DNA. Alms has become one of Maui’s big-wave ambassadors after surfing the monster waves at Peahi, or “Jaws,” surf spot.
