The Maui Film Festival’s 17th annual FirstLight: Academy Screenings on Maui event concludes this weekend at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater.
The films being presented at FirstLight received more than 30 Golden Globe, Spirit Award and Screen Actors Guild nominations this year. Among the titles being presented is “Anomalisa,” which screens at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Festival Director Barry Rivers describes “Anomalisa” as uncharted terrain.
“You know you’re in for something special,” says Rivers, “when critics call this groundbreaking stop-motion animated feature, from the hyper-creative imagination of Charlie Kauffman, ‘a masterpiece,’ ‘the most human film of the year,’ ‘a rare sliver of transcendence,’ ‘a haunting and complex marvel’ and ‘one of those rare perfect films.’ “
All these kudos, says Rivers, are for a seriocomic tale about the life challenges of an often on-the-road motivational speaker. It is also a thought-provoking treat for fans of mindfulness, meditation and the search for meaning in movies that matter.
