The Merwin Conservancy’s first Green Room event of the year will celebrate the Hawaiian language with live performances and the partial screening of the documentary “Language Matters.”
The event will begin at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at McCoy Studio Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului and will also include a panel discussion featuring the film’s host, Bob Holman, a leader of the spoken word poetry movement. Several of the film’s participants from Hawaii will also be included in the discussion, including Dr. Puakea Nogelmeier, Kepa Maly and Keali’i Reichel.
The film focuses on the rapid extinction of many of the world’s languages and the efforts to preserve them. The Hawaii segment, which includes an interview with the conservancy’s founder, W.S. Merwin, will be screened.
A reception with live music, dessert, champagne and a book fair will follow. Ticket sales benefit the nonprofit Merwin Conservancy.
Tickets to the Green Room, a literary and environmental salon series, are $25, or $10 for students with ID (plus applicable fees), and are available at the MACC box office, by calling 242-7369 or by visiting www.mauiarts.org.
