1916 – The live stock exhibit at the Maui County Fair next fall is going to be one of the surprises of the big event except to those who have been closely in touch with what has been going on in this line on Maui for the past several years. In the beef cattle class it is quite certain that all of the principal ranches of Maui will have some fine specimens to show. Hogs will also be a feature. Horses will doubtless form an interesting class. The recently organized poultry association is also planning to show what Maui can do in the way of fine fowls.

1941 – Sales of 45 out of 50 new 1941 Kelvinator refrigerators within ten days’ time as a result of good store sales promotion work and a full-page advertisement in the Maui News was reported yesterday by C. E. Chatterton, assistant manager of Kahului Store, newly appointed Maui distributors for Kelvinator electrical appliances. The advertisement also mentioned Kelvinator ranges, with the result that a number of people came in to see them. The range and water heater shipment, however, isn’t expected until the latter part of next week, arrival of which will be announced in The Maui News.

1966 – The Carthaginian, a 130-foot barkentine which was the whaling ship in the movie “Hawaii,” will be purchased by the Lahaina Restoration Foundation. “The Carthaginian will be converted into a Whaling Ship Museum, which will be one of the major tourist attractions in the Lahaina area,” foundation President Keith B. Tester said.

1991 – A strike by Mexican farmworkers ended yesterday when the laborers were allowed to go back to Texas without honoring their four-month contracts. Settlement ended the strike that began Monday but created a worker shortage for Wailuku Agribusiness as pineapple harvest season was beginning.

2006 – About 75 Hawaii Army National Guardsmen from Maui were honored as heroes Sunday morning with speeches, music and gifts for their recent service in the Middle East. The Guard’s Freedom Salute Campaign, which began in 2003, recognizes Army National Guard soldiers, their families and others who have supported them at home and abroad.
