The Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui announced the details for its fifth annual Charity Golf Tournament to be held beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Pukalani Country Club. The tournament will benefit the Women Helping Women shelter’s maintenance fund.

WHW Executive Director Sanoe Ka’aihue explained the impact this tournament makes.

“We are so grateful to the Rotary Club of Upcountry and Pukalani Superette for their continued generosity and support for our agency’s work with victims of domestic violence.

“With their donations over the past four years — now into our fifth year — we’ve been able to upkeep the maintenance of our emergency shelter, giving our victims a safe haven of healing, support and advocacy,” continued Ka’aihue. “We can’t wait to be a part of the tournament again this year. Mahalo nui!”

“We are anticipating 70 or more golfers this year,” said Mary Albitz, chair of the golf tournament. “It’s going to be another great year, and we’re excited to put on another tournament to help these women and their families live in a safe, comfortable place. Our hope is to continue to partner with businesses in the local community to make this year another successful event.”

The foundation welcomes any and all businesses and organizations to participate and sponsor the event. The tournament is the largest golf event of the year for the Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui, and is increasing in popularity every year. It is the club’s largest fundraiser with all proceeds raised directly benefiting the WHW shelter’s maintenance fund.

For the second year in a row, Myles Nakashima, of Pukalani Superette, is sponsoring the tournament.

“Once again the Pukalani Superette is proud to be the Title Sponsor of this worthy event with our donation of $2,000,” said Nakashima. “Every home and/or business requires maintenance on a regular basis. We are pleased to support this golf tournament because our donation will be applied directly to the maintenance of the Women Helping Women shelter’s home for the women in their care.

“American Savings Bank also stepped up as a Forest Sponsor for the tournament with a donation of $1,000,” added Nakashima.

The format for the tournament is a 7 a.m. shotgun four-player scramble. Prizes include a Hole-In-One contest with a prize of $10,000 sponsored by Rodeo General Store, Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin contests along with prizes for the winning and losing teams. A door prize drawing for all participants will take place during the delicious bento lunch following play.

The Golf Ball Drop contest will take place at 12:30 p.m. with a chance to win $1,000 for ball-closest-to-the-hole, $500 for the second closest and $250 for the third closest.

Cost is $20 for five golf balls for the drop and are available for purchase at the event website — you don’t have to be present to win. A light breakfast and a bento lunch will be served to participants.
